Rug Placement Guide

Living Room
  • Under Furniture: For a living room, it's common to place the rug partially or completely under the furniture. For instance, you can place the rug under the coffee table and the front legs of the sofa and chairs.
  • Front Legs Only: Another option is to have the front legs of the furniture placed on the rug while the back legs are off. This helps create a cohesive look and anchors the furniture arrangement.

Dining Room
  • Entire Table and Chairs: In a dining room, the rug should ideally be large enough to fit the entire dining table and chairs, even when they are pulled out. This ensures that the chairs remain on the rug when people are seated, preventing them from catching on the edge.

Bedroom
  • Under the Bed: In a bedroom, you can place the rug under the bed, positioning it so that there's an equal amount of rug visible on each side and at the foot of the bed.
  • Partially Under the Bed: Alternatively, you can position the rug so that it covers only the bottom two-thirds of the bed, leaving the top portion exposed.

Hallways and Entryways

  • Runner Rugs: For hallways and entryways, runner rugs are often used. These rugs should typically be the same width as the hallway or entryway and long enough to extend the length of the space.

Outdoor Spaces

  • Outdoor Furniture Arrangement: In outdoor spaces, rugs can help define seating areas. Place outdoor rugs underneath furniture sets to anchor the space and provide comfort underfoot.

Rug Size

  • Room Size: The size of the rug should be proportional to the size of the room. In larger rooms, you can use larger rugs to fill the space, while in smaller rooms, opt for smaller rugs that leave some floor space exposed.

Visual Balance

  • Symmetry and Proportion: Consider the overall balance of the room when placing rugs. Aim for symmetry and proportion in relation to the furniture and the space.

Personal Preference

  • Experiment: Ultimately, rug placement is also about personal preference and the specific layout and style of your space. Feel free to experiment with different placements until you find what works best for your room.

Remember, these are just general guidelines, and there's room for creativity and individuality in rug placement. Trust your instincts and what looks and feels right in your space.
